The Problem

Light leaking through your shutters?

Flat shutter blades overlap, but they never seal. So every blade lets a line of light through, and on an east or west facing window it lights up the whole room. Then the heat follows it in.

  • ✕A bright line of light at every blade, even fully closed
  • ✕Worse on sun facing windows and early mornings
  • ✕Heat pours straight through the blades in summer
  • ✕Flat blades that sag and drift out of line over time

Introducing LUVRE™

See the difference in your own window. We’ll measure, quote and answer every question right at your home.

The Fix

LUVRE™ blades close tight. Really tight.

LUVRE’s patented curved blade nests into the blade above it instead of just overlapping. A soft seal strip on the sides catches the edge light. The result is the shutter look you love with far fewer light gaps, and a Thermé coating that keeps the heat out.

Picture it

A closed shutter that actually looks closed. Calm, dark and cool.

Far Fewer Light Gaps

Curved blades nest into each other and a soft seal closes the sides. The bright lines you get through ordinary shutters mostly disappear.

Cooler Rooms

LUVRE™ Thermé is a thermal coating on every blade. It reflects heat before it gets in, so sun facing rooms stay comfortable.

Built To Stay Tight

CornerCore reinforced corners and 90mm hinges stop panels sagging and warping. Blades stay lined up for years.

A Softer Look

Curved blades and curved rails. Less like a set of slats, more like a piece of joinery. Two crisp whites, 89mm or 114mm blades.

Up close

Every part of the shutter, rethought.

LUVRE shutter patented curved blade profile, close up

Patented curved blade

Thicker at the leading edge and cupped along its length, so each blade tucks into the one above when you close it. This is the part that cuts the light gaps.

LUVRE shutter blades side on, showing the curve that nests each blade into the next

Blades that nest, not overlap

Seen side on, the curve is obvious. Flat blades only overlap and leave a line of light. LUVRE™ blades close into each other.

LUVRE shutter frame edge with soft seal strip

Soft Seal edges

A fabric strip built into the frame catches the light that sneaks down the sides and holds the blades in line for longer.

LUVRE shutter CornerCore reinforced panel corner

CornerCore corners

Reinforced panel corners stop bending and warping, whether the panel is sitting in the frame or swinging open every day.

LUVRE shutter curved top rail matching the blade curve

Curved rails

The top and bottom rails share the blade’s curve, so the panel closes evenly from top to bottom and reads as one clean piece.

LUVRE shutter fully closed with blades nested tight

Closed means closed

Blades nested, sides sealed, rails matched. A shutter that looks shut, and is.

Every blade also carries the LUVRE™ Thermé thermal coating and a scratch resistant finish. Super White or Snow White. 89mm or 114mm blades. Signature 90mm colour matched hinges as standard.

Common Questions

Things people ask before booking

How is LUVRE™ different from a normal shutter?
The blade. A normal shutter has flat blades that overlap when closed. LUVRE™ has a patented curved blade that nests into the blade above it, plus a soft seal strip on the sides. It closes far tighter, so far less light gets through. Every blade also carries the LUVRE™ Thermé thermal coating, and the panels have reinforced CornerCore corners and 90mm hinges.
Does it block all the light?
No shutter blocks every bit of light, and we will not tell you otherwise. What LUVRE™ does is cut the light gaps right down compared with an ordinary flat blade shutter. If you need a completely dark room, pair it with a blockout blind or curtain and your consultant will show you how.
What colours and blade sizes are there?
Two whites, Super White and Snow White, both in a scratch resistant finish. Blades come in 89mm or 114mm. Your consultant will bring a sample so you can see the curve and the colour in your own light.
Will they keep the room cooler?
LUVRE™ Thermé is a thermal coating that reduces heat transfer through the blades, so rooms that cop the afternoon sun stay more comfortable. Real world results depend on your glazing, room size and climate. Your consultant will set realistic expectations for your home.
How long does it take?
The home consultation runs 30 to 45 minutes. Once you order, LUVRE™ shutters are made to measure and usually delivered in 4 to 6 weeks, then fitted by our team. We will give you a clear timeline at the consult.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. Free. No obligation. No pressure to buy on the day. Take a week. Take a month. We'd rather you make the right call than a fast one.
What areas do you service?
Canberra, Batemans Bay, Nowra and Wagga Wagga. We come to you. If you're outside those areas, get in touch and we'll let you know if we can help.

Architectural, Built-In Look

Why Plantation Shutters Add Value to Any Home

Plantation shutters, also called window shutters or shutter blinds, aren’t just window coverings; they’re an architectural feature. They give windows a built-in, permanent look that adds visual weight and quality to any room. Unlike blinds and curtains that dress a window, shutters become part of the window.

These window coverings are built to last. PVC shutters handle humidity, moisture, and daily wear without warping or fading. Timber shutters bring natural warmth and character that improves with age. Both materials are made to measure for your exact windows and fitted by our own team across Canberra, the South Coast and Wagga. No gaps on the edges, no compromise on fit, no off-the-shelf sizing.

The louvre system gives you precise light control. Tilt the louvres to any angle to direct light exactly where you want it. Close them fully for complete privacy and good insulation, fold or slide the panels fully open to clear the window entirely. No other window covering gives you this combination of light control, privacy, and clean aesthetics.

PVC vs Timber

Room Guide

Plantation Shutters In Every Room

Bathroom

PVC plantation shutters are the best choice for bathrooms. They handle moisture, humidity, and steam without warping, cracking, or peeling. Unlike timber, PVC won’t absorb water or swell over time.  Bathroom shutters give you privacy without blocking natural light. Tilt the louvres open for ventilation and light while keeping privacy at eye level. Close them fully for complete coverage during bathing.  They’re also easy to clean in a bathroom environment. A quick wipe with a damp cloth removes any moisture or soap residue.  For bathroom windows that face a neighbour, tier-on-tier shutters are a popular choice. Keep the bottom panel closed for privacy while opening the top panel for light and ventilation.

Our Recommendation

PVC Plantation Shutters — Tier-on-Tier for street-facing windows.

Kitchen

PVC plantation shutters work well in kitchens where moisture, grease, and cooking steam are part of daily life. They’re easy to wipe down and maintain without the worry of damage from humidity.  Kitchen shutters give you precise control over light and ventilation. Tilt the louvres to let air circulate while keeping the sun off your benchtops. Close them for privacy from neighbours.  For kitchen windows above sinks or benches, shutters provide a clean, built-in look that curtains and blinds can’t match. No fabric to get splashed or stained.

Our Recommendation

PVC Plantation Shutters — Full Height or Tier-on-Tier.

Bedroom

Timber or PVC plantation shutters add a premium, architectural feel to bedrooms. The solid construction provides good light blocking when the louvres are closed, though they won’t achieve the total darkness of blockout curtains or blinds.  For bedrooms where complete darkness is important, pair plantation shutters with a blockout roller blind behind. The shutter provides the visual feature and daytime light control. The blind handles nighttime blackout.  Tier-on-tier shutters are popular in bedrooms. Open the top panel for morning light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy.

Our Recommendation

Timber Plantation Shutters with Blockout Roller Blind behind.

Living Room

Plantation shutters make living rooms feel complete. The solid frames and clean lines give windows a built-in look that adds value and visual weight to the space. They suit both modern and traditional living rooms.  For large living room windows, bi-fold or sliding shutters provide full access to the view when open and clean coverage when closed. The wider louvre sizes (89mm or 114mm) work best in larger rooms, creating a more open, contemporary feel.

Our Recommendation

Bi-Fold or Sliding Plantation Shutters, 89mm or 114mm louvres.

Sliding Doors & Large Openings

Sliding or bi-fold plantation shutters cover wide openings including sliding doors, stacking doors, and large window banks. The panels stack neatly to the side or fold back for full access.  Plantation shutters on sliding doors provide a permanent, architectural alternative to vertical blinds or panel glides. They’re more durable, more premium-looking, and add property value.

Our Recommendation

Hinged Plantation Shutters — custom measured for each bay angle.

Bay Windows

Bay window plantation shutters follow the angles of the bay, creating a consistent look across all sections. Each panel is custom made to match the exact angles and dimensions. The result enhances the architectural detail of the bay rather than hiding it.

Our Recommendation

Hinged Plantation Shutters — custom measured for each bay angle.

Colour Guide

Plantation Shutter Colours & Finishes

Plantation shutters are available in a wide range of colours and finishes. The right choice depends on your interior style, existing joinery colours, and how much you want the shutters to stand out or blend in. White and off-white are the most popular colours. They suit almost any interior, brighten the room, and create a clean, timeless look. White shutters also match most skirting boards and door frames, creating visual consistency. Light grey and charcoal finishes are increasingly popular in modern and coastal homes. They add depth without the starkness of white. Natural timber stains (available on timber shutters only) showcase the wood grain for a warm, organic feel. Popular in living rooms and bedrooms where texture and natural materials are part of the design. Custom paint colours are also available. Match your shutters to your wall colour, joinery, or a specific colour from your interior palette. During your in-home consultation, we bring colour samples so you can compare finishes against your walls, floors, and existing joinery in your own light.

PVC or Timber Plantation Shutters. Which Suits Your Home

PVC Plantation Shutters

PVC plantation shutters are chosen for spaces where durability matters most. They perform well in areas exposed to moisture or humidity, such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, and coastal homes.

PVC does not absorb moisture and is easy to maintain, making it a reliable choice for everyday living where shutters are opened and closed often.

Best suited to:

Timber Plantation Shutters

Timber plantation shutters are selected for their natural warmth and classic appearance. They suit interior living areas and bedrooms where conditions are stable and visual detail matters.

Timber can be painted or stained to suit different interior styles, making it a popular choice in rooms where shutters are part of the design, not just the function.

Best suited to:

Pairing Plantation Shutters with Blinds

Plantation shutters can be paired with blinds when you want extra control without changing the clean look of the window. In this setup, the shutters remain the main feature, with the blind adding flexibility when needed.

Roller blinds are the most common choice. When raised, they stay out of sight and keep the window looking open. When lowered, they provide additional privacy and light control, which works well in bedrooms and street-facing rooms

Pairing Plantation Shutters with Curtains

Curtains are often paired with plantation shutters in larger rooms or spaces with higher ceilings, where scale and softness matter. The shutters provide structure and control, while curtains frame the window and add warmth.

This combination suits living areas and open spaces where you want a more layered look without hiding the shutters behind them. Fabric choice then allows you to adjust the level of softness and privacy within the room.

Pricing Guide

Plantation Shutters Pricing

The cost of plantation shutters depends on the size of your windows, the shutter style, and the material selected.

As a general guide, pricing starts from around $400 for a standard 1,000mm wide by 1,000mm high window.

Final pricing varies based on:

  • exact window measurements

  • choice of PVC or timber

  • shutter configuration, such as hinged, sliding, or bi-fold

  • installation requirements

A free measure and quote is the best way to get accurate pricing for your home.

Choosing the Right Mounting Option

These shutters can be mounted in different ways depending on your window depth and frame style. The two most common options are inside mount and outside mount.

Inside Mount Plantation Shutters

Inside mount shutters are fitted within the window frame, creating a clean, built-in look that sits neatly inside the opening. This option works best when the window frame has enough depth to house the shutter panels.

It’s often chosen when a minimal, architectural finish is the priority.

Outside Mount Plantation Shutters

Outside mount shutters are installed on the wall or trim surrounding the window. This option is commonly used when the window frame does not have enough depth for an inside mount.

Outside mounting can also help cover uneven frames or create a stronger visual feature around the window.

Your in-home consultation includes advice on the best mounting option for your windows, based on both fit and overall appearance.

Getting the Right Fit for Your Windows

Plantation shutters are fitted in a way that suits your window structure and the finish you want. The right option depends on window depth, frame condition, and how you want the shutters to sit in the space.

Reveal Fit Shutters

Recess fit shutters are installed within the window opening, creating a neat, built-in finish that sits flush with the frame. This option works best when the window has enough depth to house the shutter panels without obstruction.

Recess fitting is often chosen when a clean, minimal look is the priority.

Face Fit Shutters

Face fit shutters are installed onto the wall or architrave surrounding the window. This option is commonly used when the window frame does not have enough depth for a recess fit.

Face fitting can also help frame the window and provide full coverage where openings are uneven or irregular.

Your in-home consultation includes advice on the most suitable fitting option, based on both fit and appearance.

How Slat Size Changes the Look and Light

Slat size affects how much light enters the room and how open the shutters feel when adjusted. Wider slats allow more light through and create a clearer view when open, while narrower slats give a more traditional look.

Common slat sizes include 64mm, 89mm, and 114mm. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose a size that suits your window proportions, room layout, and the feel you want to achieve.

Slat selection is guided by window size, room use, and personal preference.

64mm

89mm

114mm

Tilt Rod Options and Finishes

Tilt rods are used to adjust the louvres and control light and privacy. Depending on the look you prefer, the tilt rod can be centre mounted or offset.

For a cleaner finish, a concealed tilt option is also available. This allows the louvres to be adjusted without a visible control rod, keeping the shutters looking simple and uncluttered.

Renovating or Building? Plan Shutters Early

If you’re renovating or building, planning plantation shutters early helps avoid compromises later. Considering window furnishings at this stage allows layouts, finishes, and mounting options to be aligned from the beginning.

Early planning also helps maintain a consistent look across the home, rather than making last-minute decisions once windows are already in place.

Our team can review your plans and provide clear guidance on shutter styles, materials, and fitting options before installation begins.

SMART HOME READY

Motorised Plantation Shutters For Smart Homes

Plantation shutter louvres can be fitted with motorised tilt control for hands-free operation. Adjust the angle of your louvres with a remote, smartphone, or voice command without touching the shutters. Especially useful for high windows and hard-to-reach installations. Works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Apple HomeKit.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Are plantation shutters good for bathrooms?

Yes, if you choose PVC. PVC plantation shutters handle moisture, humidity, and steam without warping or swelling. They’re the recommended material for bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens. Timber shutters are not recommended for wet areas. For bathroom privacy, tier-on-tier shutters let you keep the bottom closed while opening the top for ventilation and light.

Plantation shutters are available in a wide range of colours and finishes. White and off-white are the most popular. Grey, charcoal, and natural timber stains are also available. Custom paint colours can be matched to your existing joinery or interior palette. PVC shutters come in a fixed range of colours. Timber shutters can be painted or stained to any colour.

PVC shutters (also called vinyl, faux wood, or plastic shutters) are moisture-resistant, low-maintenance, and best for wet areas. Timber shutters have a warmer, more natural look and can be painted or stained to any colour. They’re best for dry living areas and bedrooms. PVC is generally more affordable. Timber is the premium option.

Yes. Bay window plantation shutters are custom made to follow the angles of the bay. Each panel is measured and built to match the exact dimensions and angles of your specific bay window, creating a consistent premium look across all sections.

Custom plantation shutters start from around $400 for a standard hinged window. Bi-fold shutters from $600. Sliding from $700. Bay windows from $800. Tier-on-tier from $500. Shaped (custom) shutters are quoted on consultation. All prices include measure, supply, and installation.

Yes. Pairing plantation shutters with roller blinds behind gives you extra light control and privacy, especially in bedrooms. Pairing with curtains adds softness and warmth in larger living spaces. The shutters stay as the main architectural feature.

Yes. Plantation shutters have no cords or chains. The louvre tilt rod is the only operating mechanism and is fixed to the shutter panel. All Watson plantation shutters are 100% ACCC compliant. Motorised louvre tilt is available for even simpler operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Crimsafe?

Crimsafe is a stainless steel mesh security screen for doors and windows. Its patented Screw-Clamp technology holds a strong 304 stainless steel mesh in a vice-like grip, so it keeps intruders and insects out while letting air, light and views in.

A normal flyscreen keeps insects out but offers no real security. Crimsafe uses structural stainless steel mesh clamped into an aluminium frame, so it does both, keeping bugs out and standing up to knives, tools and heavy force.

Regular and Classic withstand up to 550 joules of impact, with Classic offering a frame with no visible screws. Ultimate is up to 40% stronger and withstands up to 750 joules. iQ is the highest rated, the only mesh screen door in Australia to pass the European RC2 test.

Yes. The fine 304 stainless steel mesh keeps out mosquitoes, flies and other pests, so you can leave doors and windows open for fresh air.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a canopy awning?

A canopy awning is a fixed fabric awning shaped over a window, door or walkway. It shades the opening from sun and light rain and adds character to your home. Unlike a folding arm awning, it stays in place rather than retracting.

Three main styles: door canopies over an entry, elegant curved cupolas, and traditional Dutch hoods. All are made to measure in a wide range of quality Sattler fabrics, shapes and colours.

A Dutch hood is a traditional convex “hood” shaped canopy fitted over a window or door. It is a timeless, heritage look that suits period and character homes, and it shades the glass while sheltering it from the weather.

Canopy awnings are made from quality water-resistant acrylic fabric, so they shed sun and light rain and protect the opening below. They are weather protection rather than a fully sealed roof. For an all-weather waterproof cover, ask us about the Sintesi retractable roof.

Choose a canopy awning if you want a fixed, decorative shade that adds street appeal and never needs operating. Choose a folding arm or retractable awning if you want to open and close a larger shaded area over a patio or deck. Our team can help you pick the right one.

Price depends on the style, size and fabric you choose, since every canopy is made to measure. The best way to get an accurate figure is a free measure and quote. Book a consultation and we will price it for your exact windows or doors.

Yes. Watson has showrooms in Canberra, Nowra, Batemans Bay and Wagga Wagga, and we install canopy awnings across the ACT and NSW, including the South Coast and Wollongong. We have been doing it locally since 1968.

OUTDOOR LIVING, YOUR WAY

Sky When You Want It, Shelter When You Do Not

A Sintesi is a motorised, waterproof retractable roof system that glides along tracks over your patio, pergola or pool. Open it to let the sun and breeze in, or close it in seconds to shut out fierce sun and heavy rain. Built-in gutters carry the water away through the posts, so the space underneath stays dry and usable all year. Best of all, in most cases it needs no council approval to install.

ALL-WEATHER

100% Waterproof, Gutters Built In

The Sintesi is covered with a fully waterproof architectural fabric and sheds up to 56 litres of rain per square metre every hour. An integrated gutter runs along the front bar and the downpipes are hidden inside the posts, so rain drains away neatly and the space underneath stays dry.

BUILT TO LAST

Built To Handle Aussie Weather

Rated to winds of up to 102km/h, the Sintesi is one of the strongest retractable roof systems available. The extruded aluminium frame and steel components are engineered for Australian sun, wind and rain, and every system is made to the European CE standard and backed by a 5-year warranty.

MADE TO MEASURE

Sized To Fit Your Space

Every Sintesi is made to measure. A single unit spans up to 6 metres and projects out to 6.8 metres, and units link together to cover up to 24 metres for large patios or commercial areas. Choose from up to 140 powder-coat colours so the frame blends with your home.

Beyond size and colour, a few smart add-ons turn your Sintesi into a true year-round room. Mix and match to suit how you live outdoors.

Warm-white dimmable LED strips run inside the frame, so the space is lit for evening dinners and gatherings. Rated IP65 for the outdoors and controlled from the same remote.

STAY WARM

Built-In Heating

Add integrated heaters, up to 2300W each, covering around 6 square metres per unit. Take the chill off cool nights so you can use the space right through winter.

Screens & Enclosures

Close in the sides and front with fixed or retractable screens in clear PVC or mesh, manual or motorised. Add optional glass doors to make it a fully enclosed room.

HANDS-FREE

Rain & Sun Sensors

Fit rain, sun and wind sensors and the roof looks after itself, closing when the weather turns and opening again when it clears, even while you are out.

OUR RANGE

Four Sintesi Retractable Roof Systems

WALL OR STRUCTURE MOUNTED

Sintesi Classic

The workhorse of the range. The Classic fixes to a wall or your own structure, with the carriage running neatly above the guide rails. It spans wider than any other model, so it is the go-to for large patios and alfresco areas.

  • Up to 6m wide, or 24m linked
  • Projection up to 6.8m
  • Wall or structure mounted
  • Best for large patios and alfresco

FULLY CONCEALED

Sintesi Ghost

The sleekest option. The Ghost is built into a pergola or frame so the fabric disappears completely when retracted, and the windbreaks double as its storage casings. Clean lines, with nothing on show.

  • Up to 4.5m wide, or 9m linked
  • Projection up to 5.5m
  • Fabric hidden when retracted
  • Best for a minimal, built-in look

FREE-STANDING

Sintesi Shade

A free-standing pergola system for spots with no wall to fix to. Drop it over a poolside lounge, a courtyard or a garden setting for instant, self-supporting shade.

  • Up to 4.5m wide, or 9m linked
  • Projection up to 7m
  • Free-standing frame
  • Best for pools, courtyards and gardens

FREE-STANDING PAVILION

Sintesi Quattro

A free-standing pavilion for big open spaces. The Quattro adds clean cladding around the perimeter columns and runs as a single or double pitch, so it works as a standalone outdoor room.

  • Free-standing pavilion
  • Single or double pitch
  • Cladded perimeter columns
  • Best for large open entertaining areas

SMART HOME READY

Motorised, With Lighting And Heating Built In

Every Sintesi is motorised as standard. Open or close it with a remote or from your phone, and add rain and sun sensors so it reacts to the weather on its own. Dimmable LED lighting, heating and even a sound system can be built in, so your outdoor room works day or night, summer or winter.

SIMPLE DESIGN, REAL COMFORT

Stop The Heat Before It Gets In

A window awning is an external shade that sits over your window and blocks the sun before it hits the glass. That is the key. Once heat comes through the glass it is already in your home. A window awning stops it outside.

The result is cooler rooms, lower cooling bills, and less fading on your floors and furniture. Choose fixed or retractable, in fabric or a range of styles, all made to measure for your windows.

WHY WINDOW AWNINGS

Block The Sun Before It Hits The Glass

Once the sun hits your glass, the heat is already inside. A window awning stops it outside, before it gets in. That keeps your rooms noticeably cooler through summer and takes the load off your air conditioning.

LOWER YOUR BILLS

Cut Your Cooling Costs

Blocking the heat before it enters means your cooling does not have to work as hard. That can mean real savings on your power bills over a hot Australian summer, year after year.

PROTECT YOUR HOME

Less Fading, Longer-Lasting Interiors

Direct sun fades floors, carpets, curtains and furniture. A window awning shades the glass and cuts the UV coming in, so your interiors keep their colour and last longer.

OUR RANGE

Window Awnings for Every Home and Budget

Choose the right fit for your space with designs made to block heat, reduce energy use, and last for years.

Simple Cooling That Works All Year Round

Automatic Awnings

Automatic awnings are one of the most popular and practical ways to stop heat before it reaches your glass. They roll smoothly up and down guide rails, locking into place when lowered and releasing with a gentle lift. Perfect for ground-level windows, they let you control how much heat and light enters your home all day.

Features & benefits

  • Self-locking arms that secure at a set position
  • Smooth, quiet operation for everyday use
  • Airflow between fabric and window prevents heat build-up
  • Easy to raise or lower by hand, no tools or cranks

How it works: They work especially well on windows that get strong sun but still need airflow to keep interiors comfortable.

Reliable Cooling for Higher Windows

Fixed-Guide Awnings

Fixed-Guide Awnings are made for windows that are hard to reach, like upper-storey or stairwell windows that get direct sun. They glide up and down sturdy side rails and stop at any height, giving you full control over heat and airflow even on higher levels.

Features & benefits

  • Effective heat control for upper, hard-to-reach windows
  • Stops at any point for custom coverage
  • Airflow between fabric and window reduces trapped heat
  • Strong, stable guide rails that hold firm in wind
  • Manual, crank, or motorised operation

How it works: The awning runs along fixed metal guides beside your window, so you can set it to suit the sun through the day without losing light or ventilation.

Cooler Homes with Better Airflow

Pivot-Arm Awnings

Pivot-Arm Awnings are designed to keep heat out while letting fresh air in. They project out from the wall at an angle so air circulates behind the fabric and hot air does not build up near your windows. Ideal for large or outward-opening windows.

Features & benefits

  • Stops heat before it reaches the glass
  • Natural airflow through the open space behind the fabric
  • Adjustable arms for flexible positioning
  • Suitable for outward-opening windows and doors
  • Manual or motorised operation

How it works: The angled projection gives you year-round control: cool comfort in summer and open sunlight in winter.

Simple Design, Solid Heat Protection

Straight Drop Awnings

Straight Drop Awnings are a simple, effective way to stop heat before it reaches your windows. The fabric hangs vertically over the glass, creating a barrier that keeps rooms cooler and more comfortable without blocking natural airflow.

Features & benefits

  • Prevents heat build-up inside the home
  • Natural airflow between the fabric and glass
  • Compact, low-maintenance design
  • Manual or motorised operation
  • Fits neatly into narrow or awkward spaces

How it works: The fabric drops straight down and secures with clips, straps, or side channels, forming a thermal barrier while still allowing ventilation around the edges.

Strong, Sleek, and Built to Last

Wire-Guide Awnings

Wire-Guide Awnings combine clean, modern design with durable performance. Stainless-steel cables guide the fabric and keep it steady in wind while keeping a streamlined look. Perfect for sun-facing windows and outdoor spaces where you want reliable heat control without bulky fittings.

Features & benefits

  • Blocks heat before it reaches the glass
  • Slim, modern profile with minimal hardware
  • Rust-resistant cables built for coastal or windy areas
  • Smooth, quiet daily movement
  • Manual, crank, or motorised operation

How it works: The fabric runs along tensioned stainless-steel cables fixed at each side, which stops swaying or flapping and keeps everything neat, even in a breeze.

Fabrics Built For Australian Sun

The right fabric makes a big difference to comfort and performance. We work with trusted Australian suppliers including Vistaweave, HVG, Shaw, and Ricky Richards, known for durable outdoor fabrics that handle sun, wind, and rain. When selecting your fabric, consider:

Air flow

If you are enclosing a verandah or patio, think about whether you still want a cool breeze coming through. If so, choose an open-weave fabric with around 10% openness.

Durability

Our fabrics have Duraguard Protector treatment, which resists stains and protects against mildew and fungi build-up.

Privacy and view-through

Our open-weave fabrics allow one-way view only. Enjoy great views through the day, with UV protection and shade while keeping your privacy.

Colour fastness

Our fabrics are made for Australian conditions and have excellent fade resistance. You can be sure the fabric will stay the colour you selected for many years to come.

MADE LOCALLY

Made In Our Own Canberra Factory

Watson window awnings are made locally in our Canberra factory and built to last. We have been designing, making and installing outdoor products for 50+ years. Because we build everything ourselves, you get a perfect fit, faster turnaround, and local support.

Yes. A window awning blocks the sun outside, before it hits the glass. That stops most of the heat getting in, keeps rooms cooler, and cuts how hard your cooling has to work.

Both. Some styles stay in place, others retract or roll up so you can let the sun back in during winter. We help you pick the right one for each window.

Most use a durable outdoor fabric on a metal frame. We also do canvas and modern wire-guide styles. All fabrics are made for Australian sun with strong fade resistance.

They shed light rain and let you leave windows slightly open for airflow. They are designed mainly for sun and heat, not heavy rain.

Both. You can operate most styles by hand, by crank, or upgrade to a motor for easy control of higher or hard-to-reach windows.

DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

Stop The Heat Overhead

A Sundream awning is a large motorised sunshade that mounts overhead. Fit it above a glass roof, pergola or conservatory, over any roof or structure that lets too much sun and heat through, or as a freestanding shade on its own posts. It stops the sun and heat before they get in, so the space below stays cooler and usable all year.

It runs on sturdy aluminium guide rails for smooth, quiet, low-maintenance movement. The front bar is driven by tie rods and high-strength resin pulleys so it never jams, and an internal roller with heavy-duty springs keeps the fabric tensioned as it extends and retracts.

WHERE THEY WORK

An Awning For Every Outdoor Space

Patio

Patios catch the afternoon sun and the odd gust and downpour. Close the space in and you can use it all year.

Our Recommendation

Enclose it with straight-drop outdoor blinds for sun, wind and rain.

Alfresco

Alfresco dining deserves cover you can use in any weather, not just on clear days.

Our Recommendation

Fit a Louvre Roof that opens and closes for all-season entertaining.

Balcony

Balconies are exposed and often sit above windows, so shade needs to stay contained.

Our Recommendation

A wire guide or straight-drop awning drops down neatly without taking over.

Deck

Decks are built for relaxing outside with open shade overhead and nothing in the way.

Our Recommendation

A folding arm awning gives wide, open shade with no posts.

WHAT IT COSTS

How Much Do Retractable Awnings Cost?

Price depends on the type of awning, its size, the fabric, and whether you choose manual or motorised. A large motorised folding arm awning costs more than a compact window awning.

Because every awning is made to measure, the best way to get an accurate price is a free measure and quote. No cost, no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a retractable awning?

A retractable awning extends out to give shade and rolls or folds away when you do not need it. Folding arm awnings, window awnings and straight-drop awnings are all types of retractable awning.

The fabric is water resistant and sheds light rain. In heavy rain it is best to retract fabric awnings. For full waterproof cover, an opening roof or the Sintesi retractable roof is the better choice.

They handle light to moderate wind. In strong wind, retract them. Add a motion sensor and a motorised awning retracts automatically when the wind picks up, protecting it even when you are out.

Yes. They cut heat and cooling costs, protect your furnishings from UV, and add usable outdoor living space and value to your home.

A quality awning lasts many years. Our folding arm, window and canopy awnings are made in our own factory, with a lifetime warranty on in-house manufacture and a 10-year warranty on our fabrics.

Both. Operate one with a manual crank, or upgrade to a motor run by remote, app or voice, with optional sun and wind sensors.
