Full Flexibility Day and Night
Double curtains are a two-layer curtain setup on a double track system: The inner layer (closest to the window) is a sheer curtain. It filters natural light, provides daytime privacy, and adds a soft, airy feel to the room.
The outer layer (closest to the room) is a blockout curtain. It blocks all light for total darkness, adds insulation to reduce heat loss and gain, and provides complete nighttime privacy. During the day, keep the sheers drawn and the blockouts open. You get soft filtered light and privacy without the room feeling dark or closed off. At night, close the blockouts for total coverage.
The room goes dark, the outside stays out, and the double layer traps air between them for improved insulation. This is the most popular and most flexible curtain configuration we install. It looks beautiful, works all year round, and gives you complete control over how every room feels at any time of day.

Choose Your Heading Style
Modern & Popular
Clean, modern, and always in style. The fabric hangs in smooth, even ripples. Our top recommendation for double curtains. Works beautifully with both the sheer and blockout layers and gives the most contemporary look.
Best For
Contemporary, coastal, and minimalist homes. Living rooms and bedrooms.
Classic & Tailored
A tailored look with tightly gathered fabric pinched into defined folds. More structured than S-fold. Works well in formal spaces and heritage homes.
Best For
Formal living rooms, dining rooms, and traditional or classic interiors.
Traditional Structure
Tightly gathered fabric at the top for a traditional look. Provides the most fullness of all heading styles. Works well in heritage homes and more formal spaces.
Best For
Heritage homes and spaces where a more dressed-up, traditional look is preferred.
Insulation You Can Feel
Double curtains do more than control light and privacy. They also help regulate the temperature in your home. In winter, the blockout layer traps heat inside, reducing the need to constantly run the heater.
The air gap between the two curtain layers adds an extra insulation buffer that a single curtain can’t match. In summer, the blockout fabric blocks harsh sunlight and radiant heat, keeping rooms cooler for longer. The sheers can stay drawn during the day to filter UV while the blockouts are open.
The combination of two fabric layers plus the trapped air between them makes double curtains one of the most effective curtain configurations for insulation. For homes in regions with extreme temperature swings, this matters.
Blockout vs Insulated
Blockout curtains are designed to block light completely. They give you total darkness and privacy. The fabric is opaque with a light-blocking coating.
Insulated curtains also block light but include a specialised thermal lining that reduces heat transfer through the fabric. They help trap heat inside during winter and block it out during summer.
If your main goal is privacy, darkness, and sleep quality, standard blockout curtains will do the job. If you want to reduce heat transfer and lower your energy bills, insulated curtains with thermal lining are the smarter choice. The extra cost is usually recovered through lower heating and cooling costs.
Both types work as the outer layer in a double curtain setup.
SMART HOME READY
Track Options
Two independent tracks — sheers on the inner, blockouts on the outer. Each layer draws independently. Simple and reliable.
Both layers independently motorised. Open sheers from bed in the morning, close blockouts from the couch in the evening. Works with Google Home, Alexa, and HomeKit.
Why Double Curtains
All Watson curtain fabrics are fire retardant as standard — both sheers and blockouts. No upgrade needed.
The air gap trapped between the sheer and blockout layers adds an extra insulation buffer that a single curtain cannot match.
Double curtains hung from ceiling to floor cover the full window area including gaps above and beside the glass that blinds can miss.

Your Questions Answered
Double curtains are a two-layer curtain setup on a double track. The inner layer is a sheer curtain for daytime light and privacy. The outer layer is a blockout curtain for nighttime darkness, insulation, and privacy. Each layer operates independently. Also called layered curtains or double layered curtains.
Custom double curtains (sheer + blockout) start from around $450 for a standard window. Larger windows and sliding doors start from $650. Motorised double curtain tracks add from $300. The exact price depends on window size, fabrics, and heading style. Book a free consultation for an accurate quote.
Yes. They’re one of the most popular bedroom window treatments. The blockout layer creates total darkness for sleep. The sheer layer lets in soft morning light when you want it. The insulation from both layers keeps the room warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
A double curtain track is a two-channel rail system that holds two separate curtains. One channel carries the sheer curtain, the other carries the blockout. Each curtain slides independently. The track can be ceiling-mounted for a clean, modern look or wall-mounted with a pelmet.
Yes. Both layers can be fitted with motorised tracks for remote, smartphone, or voice control. Each layer operates independently. Set schedules so your sheers open in the morning and your blockouts close at sunset. Works with Google Home, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit.
S-fold (wave fold) is the most popular choice for a clean, modern look. It works beautifully with both sheer and blockout layers. Pencil pleat suits more traditional spaces. We recommend using the same heading style on both layers for a cohesive appearance.
Yes. The layered curtain look has been consistently popular for years. S-fold headings on both layers give the most modern, contemporary look. The setup works with any interior style from minimalist to traditional.
Yes. Double curtains give you the most flexibility of any window treatment: soft filtered light during the day, total darkness at night, improved insulation year-round, and a layered look that adds depth and style to any room. The two-layer system also lasts longer because the sheer protects the blockout from UV damage.
Yes. They are the most popular room for double curtains. Sheers give you privacy from the street during the day while keeping the room bright and open. In the evening, close the blockouts to reduce glare or create a cosy atmosphere. The layered look adds a designer touch.
Yes. The blockout layer reduces heat transfer through windows. The air gap between the two curtain layers adds an extra insulation buffer. In winter, this helps keep warm air inside. In summer, it blocks radiant heat. For maximum insulation, choose a blockout curtain with thermal lining.
Blockout curtains block all light for total darkness and privacy. Insulated curtains also block light but include a thermal lining that reduces heat transfer through the fabric. If your main goal is darkness and privacy, blockout is enough. If you want to reduce energy bills in extreme climates, insulated curtains with thermal lining are worth the upgrade.
Yes, but we recommend using the same heading style on both layers for the most cohesive look. If you do mix, make sure the styles complement each other. S-fold sheers with pinch pleat blockouts can work in certain spaces.
