What Is A Louvre Roof?

A louvre roof is a roof made of adjustable aluminium blades that rotate to let sun and air in, or close flat to shut the weather out. It turns a patio, deck or alfresco into a space you control, instead of one the weather controls.Tilt the blades on a hot afternoon and you get shade with airflow. Close them when it rains and water drains away through the blade profile. Open them on a clear evening and you have open sky.Watson louvre roofs are custom engineered to your site. Blades are 200mm wide with a trapezoid profile, flat underneath so the closed roof reads as a clean ceiling, tapered on top so water runs off. The frame is powder-coated extruded aluminium, so unlike a Colorbond steel roof it will not rust.

Louvre Roof Design Options

MOST POPULAR

Flat

The most popular design, and the one that suits most homes. The frame sits flat and the blades carry a one degree fall to shed water.Best when you want the roof to line up cleanly with an existing eave or ceiling.

FOR SLOPING SITES

Skillion

A sloping roof design. Skillion works when the site falls away, when you need extra height at one end, or when you want to match a sloping roofline on the house. The pitch also helps water clear quickly in heavy rain.

PREMIUM LOOK

Box Frame

A premium look built to suit rendered brick homes. Posts can be finished in rendered brick or textured blue board with a steel post inside.Choose this when you want the structure to read as part of the house rather than an addition.

FOR ANGLED SPACES

Tapered

For spaces that are not a simple rectangle. Angles, triangular sections and design features are worked into a custom frame. There is also an insert option: if you already have a frame, or are building one, we fit the louvre system into it.

BUILT FROM

Louvre Roof Materials & Specifications

Span. Blades span up to 4.0 metres in low to high wind zones, and up to 3.6 metres in very high wind zones. Larger areas are covered by adding bays.Wind zone matters. Your site’s wind classification changes what can be built. It is set during the engineering assessment, not guessed at.Every roof is engineered. Final configuration depends on your site, engineering specifications and building code compliance.

BLADES

200mm Trapezoid

200mm wide blades with a trapezoid profile. Flat on the bottom for a clean ceiling line when closed, tapered on top so water drains away.Rotate up to 160 degrees to track the sun through the day.

FRAME

150–300mm Beams

Beams from 150mm to 300mm x 50mm wide, sized to the span and your wind zone during engineering.

POSTS

100mm or 140mm

Choose 100mm or 140mm extruded aluminium posts. Box frame designs can hide a steel post inside rendered brick or blue board.

FINISH

10yr Powdercoat

External-grade Dulux powdercoat, warranted for 10 years. Two standard colours for the fastest turnaround, custom Colorbond colours on request.

HOW THEY OPERATE

Motorised Louvre Roof Controls

HANDHELD

Remote Control

Open, close and tilt the blades from a handheld remote. The simplest way to run the roof day to day.

FROM ANYWHERE

Mobile App

Control the roof from your phone. Useful when you are not home and the weather turns.

SET AND FORGET

Scheduling

Set opening and closing times daily, weekly or monthly, so the roof follows your routine without you touching it.

AUTOMATIC

Rain Sensor

An optional rain sensor closes the roof automatically when it starts raining, even if nobody is home. This is the one most people wish they had after the first unexpected downpour.

MOUNTING OPTIONS

How A Louvre Roof Attaches To Your Home

TO THE ROOFLINE

Fascia Fixed

Fixes to the fascia of your existing roofline. Common where the roof extends straight out from the house.

TO THE BUILDING

Wall Fixed

Fixes directly to the wall. Suits a defined height line, or where the fascia will not carry the load.

STANDS ALONE

Freestanding

Stands on its own posts, independent of the house. For spaces away from the building, or where you do not want to fix into it.Connects to decks, patios or concrete footings as the site requires.

ENGINEERED TO YOUR SITE

Spans To 4 Metres. Engineered Per Site.

Anyone can quote a span. The number that matters is the one your site will actually carry.Louvre roof blades span up to 4.0 metres in low to high wind zones, and up to 3.6 metres in very high wind zones. Bigger areas are covered by adding bays, not by stretching blades past what the engineering allows.Your site is assessed for wind classification before anything is built, and the frame is sized to it. Beams run 150mm to 300mm, posts are 100mm or 140mm extruded aluminium, and the final configuration has to satisfy the building code. That is the difference between a roof that lasts and a roof that becomes someone else’s problem in the first big storm.

SMART HOME READY

It Closes Itself When It Rains

Fit the optional rain sensor and the roof closes itself the moment it starts raining, whether you are home or not.Beyond that, run it from a remote, from your phone, or on a schedule you set once and forget. Open the blades for the morning sun, tilt them through the afternoon, close them at night.Integrated lighting is built into the roof, so the space works after dark without adding fittings later.

Space Guide

The Right Louvre Roof For Every Space

Patio

Patios are the most common louvre roof application. A flat design fixed to the fascia or wall lines up with the existing roof and gives you shade, airflow and rain cover in one structure.

Our Recommendation

Flat design, fascia or wall fixed.

Alfresco

An alfresco is where a louvre roof earns its keep. Close the blades and it is a room. Open them and it is a courtyard. Add a rain sensor and it looks after itself while you are out.

Our Recommendation

Flat or box frame, with a rain sensor.

Balcony

Balconies usually have an existing frame or structural limits. An insert system fits the louvres into what is already there, without rebuilding.

Our Recommendation

Insert system to work with the existing structure.

Deck

Decks often sit away from the house, or on ground that falls away. Freestanding posts or a skillion design handle both, without loading the existing structure.

Our Recommendation

Freestanding or skillion if the site falls away.

WHAT IT COSTS

Louvre Roof Cost And What Affects It

Louvre roof pricing starts from around $10,000, and a 4m x 4m louvre roof costs around $20,000 installed.

That is a real number, not a teaser. We would rather you know where this lands before we visit than find out at the quote.

What moves the price:

  • Total area, and how many bays are needed to cover it
  • Design: flat, skillion, box frame, tapered or insert
  • Your site’s wind zone, which drives beam and post sizing
  • Mounting: fascia, wall or freestanding
  • Options: rain sensor, integrated lighting, custom colours

Every roof is engineered to the site, so the only way to get an exact figure is an on-site design consultation. You get a fixed-price quote against that design, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a louvre roof?
A louvre roof is a roof made of adjustable aluminium blades that rotate to control sun, shade and airflow, and close flat to shut out rain. It is also called a louvred roof, opening roof or opening roof pergola. The blades sit in an engineered aluminium frame and are driven by a motor. Open them for sky and breeze, tilt them for shade with airflow, or close them into a solid ceiling when the weather turns.

Yes. Watson louvre roofs are waterproof and weatherproof. With the blades closed, the trapezoid blade profile channels water off the roof and into wide gutters, so the space underneath stays dry.

The blades are flat on the bottom and tapered on top. That shape is what makes a closed roof shed water properly instead of pooling it. The frame is powder-coated extruded aluminium with a 10 year finish warranty, so it handles Australian weather year after year without rusting like a Colorbond steel roof.

Want the space closed in on the sides as well? Pair the roof with outdoor blinds and you have a genuine all-weather outdoor room.

Louvre roof cost starts from around $10,000 depending on size. As a guide, a 4m x 4m louvre roof costs around $20,000 installed.

The biggest drivers are total area and number of bays, the design you choose (flat, skillion, box frame, tapered or insert), your site’s wind classification, and extras like a rain sensor or integrated lighting.

Because every roof is engineered to the site, the exact figure comes from an on-site design consultation. That consultation is free, and the quote you get back is fixed price.

Sometimes. It depends on your state and local council rules. Replacing the roof on an existing structure like a pergola or patio often does not need approval. Building a new deck, patio or pergola usually does.In NSW, patios, decks and pergolas up to 25m² can often be built without a permit if a set of conditions are met. ACT rules differ. We handle the approval process as part of the installation, so you are not left working out council requirements on your own.
Louvre roof blades span up to 4.0 metres in low to high wind zones, and up to 3.6 metres in very high wind zones.Larger areas are covered by adding bays rather than stretching blades beyond their rating. Your site’s wind classification is assessed during design and determines beam sizing (150mm to 300mm) and post sizing (100mm or 140mm).Final configuration always depends on site conditions, engineering specifications and building code compliance.
Yes, with an optional rain sensor fitted. The sensor detects rain and closes the roof automatically, whether or not anyone is home. You can also operate the roof from a remote control or a mobile app, and set opening and closing schedules by day, week or month.
For most homes with an unused patio or alfresco, yes. A louvre roof converts an area you use a few months a year into one you use all year, which is usually the cheapest way to add usable living space to a house.Beyond the space itself: aluminium reflects heat in summer and the closed roof holds warmth in winter, cutting heating and cooling load. Well-designed outdoor rooms also tend to help at resale. The honest counterpoint: it is a significant, permanent structural investment. If you want seasonal shade on a budget, outdoor blinds or a folding arm awning will cost far less and may suit you better.
