Australia is known for its beautiful outdoor spaces, and as Australians, we enjoy spending time outside, basking in the sun and taking in the scenery. Whether we’re relaxing on the patio, hosting get-togethers on the verandah, or grilling with loved ones, being outdoors brings us happiness and a sense of community.
However, the unpredictable weather and pesky insects can sometimes ruin our outdoor activities. No one wants to be caught in a sudden downpour or swarmed by bugs while trying to enjoy their time outside.
To ensure year-round comfort and protection from the elements, the right shade solution is essential. Awnings are a versatile option for creating a new outdoor space or expanding an existing one, and they offer both functional and aesthetic benefits.
At Watson, we provide awnings that not only offer excellent functionality but also look amazing. With our awnings, you can enjoy your outdoor living space throughout the year, regardless of the weather.

To ensure your awning lasts for years to come and can withstand various weather conditions, it’s essential to choose the right fabric. Different types of fabrics are recommended for different types of awnings, so it’s important to consider the type of awning you have before making a selection.
Our awning fabrics have been specifically designed to withstand harsh Australian weather conditions, and they look great while doing it. For instance, our Folding Arm awnings come in custom colour options to suit your preferences.
While there are various choices of awning fabrics available on the market, it’s crucial to keep the following factors in mind when selecting your fabric:
Air flow
If you’re looking to maintain an unobstructed view without compromising on air flow, Clear PVC is an excellent choice. On the other hand, if you want to enclose your veranda or patio while still enjoying a refreshing breeze, opt for a fabric that has an open weave with around 10% openness. This way, you can create a cosy and comfortable outdoor space while keeping the area well-ventilated.
Durability
Outdoor fabrics are constantly exposed to various elements that can damage their quality over time. Fortunately, fabrics that are equipped with DURAGUARD® Fabric Protection are specifically designed to resist stains, prevent odours, inhibit the growth of bacteria, and deter mildew and fungi build-up. This innovative protection system helps to ensure that your fabric stays in top-notch condition for longer, even when exposed to harsh outdoor conditions.
Colour fastness
Choosing a fabric with excellent fade-resistance to the sun is essential for maintaining the original colour of your awning fabric for many years. It’s recommended to select a fabric that has a fade-resistance rating of 6 or higher to ensure that your fabric retains its colour vibrancy over time. With this feature, you can be confident that your awning will continue to look as good as new, even after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Privacy and view through
It’s important to consider the difference between open and closed weave fabrics when selecting an awning fabric. You should also think about whether you require privacy during the day or at night. While an open weave fabric in a darker color provides excellent visibility during the day, it may also allow others to see inside at night, compromising your privacy. Therefore, it’s essential to weigh these factors carefully to choose an awning fabric that meets your specific needs.
